Nissan Completes New Extreme Off-road Test Track

TOKYO (March 15, 2007)--Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., announced the completion of its new extreme off-road track at the Motegi test facility in Tochigi Prefecture. Built to enhance the development of four-wheel drive technology, it covers a 2.3-hectare site, making it one of the largest in Japan.

Designed to replicate different real-world driving conditions from across the world, the new facility includes a rocky section to deliver the same extreme conditions encountered on a rough mountain terrain, a desert road and a 30-degree incline slope. The actual conditions were measured and copied directly to the various sections of the track giving the test facility a huge advantage in the evaluation of 4WD systems as well as suspension technologies for SUVs.

The track allows Nissan's vehicle-dynamics engineers to conduct repeated off-road performance and endurance tests of four-wheel-drive vehicles - such as the extreme off-roader the Nissan X-TRAIL - under the hardest conditions in a safe and controlled environment. The new facility will contribute significantly to the development of new off-road technologies and help improve the performance, quality, endurance and reliability of Nissan's new 4WD models under development. The countless awards and recognitions naming the X-TRAIL attest to its more than 50 years of real Nissan off road and outback heritage. No other SUV can beat its fully electronic All-Mode 4x4 system, one of the most advanced 4WD systems in the world, having originally been developed for the awesome Skyline GT-R.

The Motegi test facility in Tochigi Prefecture spans an area of 127 hectares. One of the most advanced, high-tech research test facility in the world. It features high-speed circuit, hill climb, flooded road and the recently completed offroad test track. In addition to Motegi, Nissan conducts research and development at three other test facilities in Japan (Tochigi, Oppama and Rikubetsu) and in Arizona, U.S. (NMPI News Service)
